Antigen tests look for specific CoV-2-SARS protein on the surface of the virus. These can only be detected when live virus is present.

Antigen tests are carried out on a nasal sample taken with a swab, which does not need to be sent to a laboratory.

Results are quick, with waiting times of 10–30 minutes.
