What is the difference between a PCR test and a serological test?

Last update: 15/05/2020

The PCR test is based on detecting the virus’s genome in a nasopharyngeal sample. This confirms whether or not the person is infected with the virus at the time the test is carried out. The serological test looks for IgM and IgG antibodies that are specific to the SARS-CoV-2 virus in a blood sample. It determines a person’s immune status, in other words, whether they are immune to the virus, even if they have not had any COVID-19 symptoms.
